Chapter 1
Ever kissed the tips of her fingers and pressed them against the computer screen. “I love you, Rob. Have a safe flight home.” She smiled as he returned the air kiss but the instant the screen turned black, she groaned and flopped backwards onto the bed. Rob, her fiancé, had spent the past six weeks traveling overseas. The original plan had been to have him gone for a month but when he had informed her that he would be another two weeks, she had felt her control slipping. Ever had always seen Robert Montgomery as an honest man of his word, never shirking responsibilities placed upon him. She knew he enjoyed his work and the people he met immensely, but from their conversations she could tell he grew weary of the constant travel. Consistently being apart from each other was tearing them both apart inside. A new client in Singapore had taken Robert’s full attention for an additional two weeks. After consulting the man on how to best safeguard his business against the growing computer espionage threat, Robert was finally coming back to her loving arms where he was desperately both wanted and needed.
She knew he hadn’t extended his stay for pleasure; it was strictly for business and worked towards their common goal. He was attempting to wrap up as many deals as possible so that his work as a consultant would be done, at least for several months. Ever knew the money he had been offered had surprised him. His skills were excellent and it was obvious that companies were more than willing to offer large sums for his personal attention to their problems. Despite the fact that the money would offer them additional security, she sometimes couldn’t help but feel it wasn
’t worth it. She just hoped he felt the same and would never be apart from her this long again. A growing dampness seeped into her panties at the thought of him turning down work and travel in order to be with her. She was more than ready to become Mrs. Ever Montgomery and it was time for him to settle down and work closer to home – at least within the boundaries of the United States!
It had been hard the first four weeks, but Ever had gotten through them by filling her days with activities that accounted for almost every hour of the day. Ever knew she would have been a nut case by now if it hadn’t been for her best friend, Violet. Violet had come to her rescue, agreeing to finally take some vacation time from her demanding job and visit Ever at Corbin’s Bend. Just the memory of how the community, and especially one man – Charles, had embraced Violet had Ever smiling. It had been absolutely amazing to watch Violet shed the life she had so carefully built in order to set herself free to really live. The fact that Charles was the head of the Discipline Board and a huge fan of spanking hadn’t scared Violet in the least. Instead, it was like watching two halves of one perfect being come together. Violet had stayed with Ever the entire month, making sure that another episode like the one that occurred during the Art Festival didn’t reoccur. Having to call and confess to Robert that she had collapsed during the fair and had been taken to Marcus’ house so the doctor could check her out hadn’t been easy. Having to explain that she had forgotten to eat or basically take care of herself had been even harder. However, knowing that Charles, as well as other neighbors, wouldn’t hesitate to contact Rob themselves to tattle on his fiancée, had given her the courage to make that call. She had sworn she wouldn’t let herself go again but shit, that was before he’d announced he’d be gone for another two weeks.
God, she had missed him terribly, aching for him to come home, to wrap her in his arms, to kiss her all over. Shuddering, she wrapped her own arms around her middle as if not able to wait for his embrace. A good tight hug was what she needed and she had no doubt that she’d be getting one – well, after he gave her what he had promised a week ago.
Sighing, she pushed herself to a sitting position. It hadn’t taken her but a few attempts to remember that once her alpha male had pronounced her sentence, no amount of whining or pleading, promises, or even her creative attempts at distracting him would keep him from his purpose. The man had been an officer in the Army for Christ’s sake. Not only had he learned how to accept orders, he’d become a master at giving them. When he told her what he required, it wasn’t open for discussion. She was expected to snap a respectful ‘yes, Sir!’ and follow his commands. Funny, she never minded the ones that led up to some very kinky play, but the order to drop them and bend over didn’t exactly have her jumping to obey.
Robert and Ever had moved to Corbin’s Bend because of the beliefs of this unique community. Here they had no need to hide the dynamic they had chosen to embrace. In Corbin’s Bend, they could openly live the DD lifestyle that they both craved, desired, and understood was the perfect fit for the two of them. They had made a list of rules together and agreed on the consequences when those rules were broken. It was a consensual list but one that Ever was having a hard time remembering without his physical presence. Rob had been alarmed and concerned when she had collapsed at the Art Festival, but he’d been forgiving. He understood how completely she immersed herself in projects and had been grateful that the community had rallied around her in his absence. Ever remembered their Skype conversation that night weeks ago and the look of both relief and disappointment on his face as seen through the webcam on her computer.
“Thank God you are all right, but Everleigh, I swear to God, you better toe the straight and narrow from this second on. If one more thing happens, young lady, you’ll be receiving a very harsh discipline session the moment I get home. Are we absolutely clear?” Rob’s face had shown his concern, his tone, his barely concealed control.
“Yes, Sir.” Ever felt about an inch tall and about as mature as a naughty toddler. She had given him her promise, a kiss with her fingertips, and hung up. He had spoken in no uncertain terms that if she continued on the path she was on, her ass would pay a bitter price.
Thankful that he was thousands of miles away, Ever had promised she would straighten up and fly right. How was she to know that Rob was also having discussions with his mentor as well as with Charles? Ever tried to convince herself that she had followed the rules over the past few weeks. She truly hadn’t meant to mess up again. However, when he informed her that he was very disappointed in her, she had felt horrid. Hearing him give her his decision that she was going to be one sorry young lady very soon, she knew she’d been busted though he wouldn’t tell her who had ratted her out. God, why hadn’t she told him herself? Sure, he’d most likely be a little pissed – okay, make that a lot pissed, but having to hear what had happened last week from someone else had been the last straw.
Lying on the bed, she ran through the events yet again. It was all her own fault but really, everything had worked out so it was easy to think it best just to let bygones be bygones. Surely Rob could understand that she did feel bad and she had made sure not to miss a single meal since that day. She never meant to skip a meal, much less several meals, but she had been so excited for the kids in her pottery class that the days just flew by. Preparing for class, getting the clay and the glazes ready, instructing each individual child – well, that took time. Though she had felt a bit dizzy after returning home, she had brushed it off. Instead of getting something to eat to regulate her blood sugar or even to just take a few minutes to lie down, she had spent another hour carefully placing all the children’s vases they had potted into the kiln. The children would be so thrilled to have their creations fired and glossy in the vibrant glazes they had chosen and she didn’t mind taking the extra effort. Art fulfilled her and sharing that love with young souls filled her own. She had placed the last vase inside the kiln, loving it despite its odd shape simply because little Jack had been so thrilled to make it as a present for his mommy, Ange.
She was still smiling as she shut the heavy lid and set the temperature and timer before flipping the switches on to fire the kiln. Standing, she had fainted dead away only to be found on the floor by her mentor, Venia, who had stopped by to check on her. By the time Dr. Marcus Devon had come and given her a shot and Venia had made her sit and eat, she felt guilt consuming her. These were the same people giving her the same lectures she’d received only a few weeks earlier. When Charles and Violet had shown up, walking into her house without so much as a by your leave, she had known her ass was grass. The lectures from the two had been bad enough, the edict that she call her counselor, Dr. Yu and explain why she had ignored her own basic needs had been horrid. His instruction that she call and confess to Rob had her bottom clenching. Finishing her entire dinner under their watchful eyes, she had been embarrassed as they all stood around her bedroom while she placed the call to Robert’s computer. When it hadn’t gone through, she had been so relieved but did her best to hide that fact from her friends’ watchful eyes. Promising that she’d confess when Rob connected with her, they finally all left. Had it really been her fault that by the time he did call, it was really late and she was so exhausted that she barely could even nod and tell him she missed him and loved him? By the next morning, she felt a hundred percent better and simply forgot about the incident as she opened the kiln and began to work.
“Shit,” Ever mumbled as she stood and headed into the bathroom. “You never should have forgotten to tell him, Everleigh Harris! Don’t you know by now that you can’t get away with even fudging the truth just a tiny bit? Now, instead of celebrating Rob’s return with a bout of bedroom gymnastics, you’ll be making all sorts of different contortions as he blisters your ass! When are you ever going to learn!”
Stripping, she stepped into the shower, gradually calming as the hot water sluiced over her body. Sitting on the built-in shower seat, she carefully shaved her legs. Looking up as if
she expected to see someone watching her, she giggled. Why not? Perhaps a sexier surprise might distract Rob from the discipline they both knew she had coming. Stepping out of the shower only long enough to retrieve her small pair of scissors, she began taking small snips at the curls of her pubic hair. Suddenly she stopped – what was she thinking? Rob had never made a single suggestion that he would like her to be bare between her legs. What if he was shocked to the point of being disgusted? Tossing the scissors onto the bathroom vanity, she ran her hands over her mound. Maybe he wouldn’t notice? Stifling a groan she found that highly unlikely as her hair was now a bit stubby before becoming curly again. Slipping her hand a bit lower, she gasped as a finger slid over her clit. Jerking her hand away, she blushed hotly.
